Making The Music to Accompany 'Mary J. Blige's My Life'

Originally published on June 25, 2021 3:52 pm Someone recently said Mary J. Blige’s voice articulates with laser precision the pain of a generation. That’s especially true of her 1994 album “My Life.” And on Friday audiences can stream a new Amazon documentary that explores this seminal album that lays bare some of Blige’s biggest life struggles. Five-time Grammy winner Mervyn Warren composed the score for “Mary J. Blige’s My Life.” To the beat of Warren’s music, Blige dives into her childhood growing up in the projects, abusive relationships and depression. Producer Quincy Jones recommended Warren write the score for the film. He and Blige didn’t know each other before the project.

Howard's Day Off

ABOUT THE SHOW and THE HOST:Howard Dicus can't play a musical instrument, and can't read music with any facility. But he spent much of his childhood playing his dad's 78 rpm jazz records, and singing with his brother and sisters, who could hear any song once or twice and sing it back in multi-part harmony. Though the family home was filled with music, exposure to classical music was limited to the usual (for babyboomers) soundtracks of movies and cartoons, and the very few classics his father acquired on record, including "The Nutcracker," "Gaite Parisienne," and "Peter and the Wolf."As a teenager, checking out jazz records from the library, Howard discovered the Swingle Singers and the Jacques Loussier Trio swinging Bach, and it was a short step from there to the real thing. Around 1979, the development of the CD led to LPs on sale for $1.99, and a headlong self-guided tour of classical music ensued, completely out of order compared to what

Elaine Hugh-Jones, pianist, tuneful composer and stalwart of BBC radio and television – obituary

Elaine Hugh-Jones: started writing each song by experimenting at the piano with random notes and musical fragments Elaine Hugh-Jones,  who has died aged 93, was a pianist and composer known for her powerful yet sensitive and tuneful songs; she was also a stalwart of BBC radio and television, working as official accompanist on countless programmes from the postwar years until 1983. Of her several song cycles the best known are the seven Walter de la Mare Songs, written between 1966 and 1988, which blend the French influence of Gabriel Fauré with the English romanticism she inherited from her teacher Lennox Berkeley. The cycle was broadcast several times on Radio 3 and was followed by several more including the powerful Songs of War, settings of Wilfred Owen’s poetry, and arrangements of verses by Frances Cornford and Gerard Manley Hopkins.
