清浙江巡抚纳兰常安所著《受宜堂宦游笔记》中记载：“苏州专诸巷，琢玉、雕金、镂木、刻竹、髹漆、装潢、针绣，咸类聚而列肆焉……概之曰‘苏作’。”雅、精、细、巧是苏作的特征，明清时期，苏作被视作时尚风向标，苏州民间手工艺占全国手工艺半壁江山，凡苏作名家，工价昂贵。苏作同时受到宫廷欢迎，故宫博物院馆藏文物中，明清苏作占有很大比例。
2014年，苏州加入联合国教科文组织全球创意城市网络，成为“手工艺与民间艺术之都”。即将于7月10日公映的非遗纪录电影《天工苏作》便将目光聚焦苏州传统工艺：宋锦、核雕、灯彩、明式家具、苏式船点� ....
