So let me introduce todays speaker, dr. Tera hunter, the edwards professor of American History and professor of africanamerican studies at princeton. Shes a specialist in the 19th and 20th century histories, and she specializes in gender, race, labor hand history of the United States south. The a little bit about her publications which are multiple awardwinning. Her most recent book is bound in wedlock, slaved and free black marriage in the 19th century published in 2017, a book about africanamericans an marriage in the 19th centuries, the winner of multiple awards including the Mary Nicholas prize and the john kelly memorial prize from the aha and the littleton griswald price from the aha and a list of other prizes and the list goes on and on. Let me mention her first book to join my freedom, southern black womens lives and labor after the civil war, another multiple prizewinning book and a wonderful book about africanamerican women in the postemancipation south. Located on the National Mall near the washington monument, the museum has quickly become one of the most visited in the nations capitol, with capacity crowds almost every day. Up next we visit the museum to tour the history galleries which began three stories underground. Welcome to the slavery and freedom exhibition. My name is mary elliott and im a Museum Specialist and cocurator of the slavery exhibition, which is one of the three exhibitions in the history gallery at the museum. We have three exhibitions in this gallery, and those exhibitions cover 15th century africa and europe all the way through to today. Some of the themes that we cover in the exhibition include holding on to humanity under some of the most inhuman conditions. Using photographs and the written record she examines not only the individual stories of the soldiers, but also the importance of africanamerican communities during and after the war. Deborah willis is University Professor and chair of the department of photography and imaging at the tisch school of the arts at New York University and has an affiliated appointment with the college of arts and Sciences Department of social and cultural analysis and africanus studies.
