governor and tomorrow in the contest for senate in pennsylvania. nearly 7.3 million people have already cast their ballots in 39 states according to one analysis. right now, president biden is making his pitch to voters. he s hoping to shift the momentum away from republicans. a new analysis of the political landscape in these final weeks shows republicans are making late gains as they try to win back control of the house. white house correspondent jeremy diamond is with us now. give us details on what the president is saying. reporter: president biden is delivering right now what he termed a closing argument here as we are just about two weeks from election day. the president, though, isn t in the battleground states where you might expect him to be delivering that kind of closing argument. he s at democratic party headquarters where he said his goal is to try to energize the organizers who are calling into those battleground states, the staff at the democratic party who

flu, and respiratory illnesses has been straining hospitals with the holidays fast apprchthe cdticken 13 min amera, sent 120,000 to the hospital, and caused 7,300 deaths. we think it s a critical time to check in with our cbs news medical contributor dr. david agus. as you know health officials in new york and even california are recommending indoor masking. what are your thoughts on that? so they re recommending, they re not mandating indoor masking. and what we re seeing is a 50% increase over the last several weeks of both the flu as well as covid-19 with the stabilization of rsv. and so we have to use caution. when hospital beds start to fill up, that s when masking starts to get recommended, and in both l.a. and new york you re seeing significant increase in hospitalizations. and in many hospitals elective cases are being canceled, and so in that case we have to recommend masks.
care and emergency department visits primarily during the delta surge. during omicron, that fell to 38%. and for the unvaccinated, new cdc data shows those 65 and older were nearly 50 times more likely to be hospitalized last month than those who were bostoned. these new studies should erase any doubt about the importance of boosters at this point in the pandemic. i think there s been, unfortunately, so much muddled messaging that made it sound like boosters are a knife to have, rather than really something essential. reporter: so far less than half of those eligible to get boosters have gotten them. meanwhile, omicron s rapid spread is straining hospitals which are at a record high and some essential services. entertainment also taking hits, like curtains closing for adele s residency in las vegas. we ve been absolutely destroyed by delivery delays and covid. reporter: but with vaccinations on the rise and cases beginning to decline in
