florida. 2.1 million floridians are in the cone of uncertainty. the east coast of florida, as well. not just a big bend situation, this is impacting florida and some rain forecast totals in effect five to eight inches, upward of a foot. that is going to be potential devastating impact is rainfall. storm surge is water going to be pushed into the coastline. we ve talked about tammy: being vulnerable to storm surge, worried about that area. if this storm wobbles, it will be impact for higher population. we re going to have to pay attention to the latest forecast. we have hurricane hunters giving the latest data. this is wind field of the storm
it is very scary. michael, thank you so much. we are at a fragile moment, and we appreciate you explaining it to us. thank you so much. thank you, brianna. jim. with the labor day holiday around the corner, hurricane idalia could cause disruptions in gas refineries which might lead to higher gas prices. it could take gas line facilities offline. it s already leading some producers to evacuate oil platforms. cnn s paula newton has been following the story for us today. this is always a concern with big storms, either damage to those facilities or they get taken offline for a bit. do we know how many and where and what expected impact this will have? jim, we have had the announcement already from chevron that at least three would be taken offline. all eyes on the gulf of mexico now to see exactly how this storm wobbles, and, again, they will continue to assess the situation. there s two things i want you to remember about gas prices, jim, in the short term, even if this
this storm wobbles to the west, the more intense the weather conditions become, especially along those coastal communities and they are so susceptible to any wobble of this particular storm. yeah, you re absolutely right. thanks for joining us. let s go to nick as we mentioned further north in melbourne, florida. and, of course, we re talking about these storm surges and flash flooding but you were mentioning earlier that people now that they realize the trajectory of dorian will maybe take it away from the coastline, people aren t as worried but they should be, shouldn t they? yeah, the storm surges are certainly a factor and they re going to be a factor so is erosion, beach erosion, a big problem, significant damage, that s going to cause probably millions of dollars of damage, similar to what we saw in hurricane matthew. it sat off the coast and grinded
the radar shows you it is a little farther off shore. this storm wobbles. people think that hurricanes move in a straight line, that never happens. they wobble as they migrate. the concern is that it is going to push away from the virgin islands. good for them. for puerto rico this is a strong category 5 as it approaches by 8:00 in the morning. look at the storm surge, 7 to 11 feet. that can push up to the second story of your house. that s what we are talking about across the entire island of puerto rico with the storm surge up to 9 feet in spots. and a storm that is different than irma in that it is going to produce tremendous rainfall. 1 to 2 feet in spots.
you finally have flights coming back in to ft. lauderdale. very slowly business trying to get back to usual. it s interesting how long it will take because of the power outages and gas shortages to get out there and assess the damage and get the recovery part of this started. gas prices, by the way, rising across the country because of both disruptions because of the refineries with harvey, and then irma, it s $2.71, and $2.27 is what it was just last week. and the cost estimate for the damage is nowhere near the $200 billion? do we know that for sure? you saw really high damage estimates, and then the storm wobbles. something called the bermuda
