Worcester Planning Board approves site plan changes for Polar Park

WORCESTER The Planning Board Wednesday approved a definitive site plan amendment for the nearly complete Polar Park that effectively memorializes small design changes, including tweaks that the board had suggested when it approved the original site plan in Nov. 2019.  Discussion of some of those changes came with hints at how the newly reconfigured Summit Street will function as a sealed off extension of the park on game days at Polar Park, the city-owned ballpark that will be the home of the top minor league baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox starting in May.  Stephen Rolle, the city s assistant chief development officer, said that included in the various design changes throughout the construction process were changes that addressed most of the board s concerns surrounding the width of sidewalks around the Canal District stadium.

Retail pot storefront gets special permit to open on Mountain Street East

Retail pot storefront gets special permit to open on Mountain Street East The Planning Board Wednesday granted a special permit for a retail marijuana storefront on Mountain Street East.  The board unanimously approved the special permit for Munro Associates LLC at 15-17 Mountain Street East, at the corner of Burncoat Street in the city s Summit neighborhood.  The establishment will be Munro s second local storefront; the company recently opened The Vault in Webster.  Joshua Lee Smith, a lawyer with the Bowditch & Dewey firm in Worcester representing Munro on the application, said the operation plans to have a total of 45 employees, with 10 to 13 employees on shift at any point in time. The business requires seven parking spaces, but the small strip mall where the marijuana retailer will be located has 28 overall spaces.

Worcester planning board supports look at chicken ordinance

WORCESTER Members of the Planning Board said Wednesday they liked the idea of reviving a discussion about allowing residents to have chickens.  The board didn t make a recommendation on a petition from resident Brian Grinnan asking for chickens to be allowed in areas of the city zoned for single family residences, but continued the discussion, and spoke favorably about allowing poultry to be raised in the city as a way to complement the city s urban agriculture ordinance.  Grinnan s petition recently went before the City Council, and was sent to the Planning Board for a recommendation. Staff Wednesday recommended the board recommend that the council not adopt the ordinance allowing chickens in RS-7 zones because of a lack of detail and specificity, but told board members that staff could draw up a decision that signaled their support for a more in-depth look at the possibility of passing a more comprehensive ordinance.
