The Children of Aphrodite: Cypriots in Australia by Professor Anastasios Tamis was launched in Cyprus by the Australian High Commission on Wednesday, 30 August, at the new Nicosia Town Hall.
The Annual General Meeting of the Cypriot Community of Melbourne and Victoria took place at the community’s headquarters at 495 Lygon Street in East Brunswick.
Members were informed of the financial situation of the group and the beginning of construction work for the multi-storey facility to house the community.
The approval of the demolition of the current building to create the new upgraded facility was voted on by members at previous general meetings and will see the construction of a multi-storey multi-purpose building behind the current façade, which is set to stay the same as the structure is heritage listed.

Konstantinos Prokopiou, the chair of the Constitution of the Pan-Australian Coordinating Committee – Justice for Cyprus (PASEKA), passed away at the age of 78.
He will always be remembered by the Greek and Cypriot community of Melbourne as a patriot, who stressed the importance of participating in events and committees, “especially in the protest about the Turkish invasion and the illegal occupation of Cypriot and European soil” to help and ease the talks for a fair solution.
Born in Trikomo, a town in north-eastern Mesaoria in Cyprus, which is now under the control of the Turkish-occupied northern area of the island.
