Senate Republicans lukewarm on House's ag labor bill

brought to you by USDA Photo by Lance Cheung Fears of repeating the mass exodus out of ag labor discussed during Senate Judiciary hearing. Suggested Event Aug 31, 2021 to Sep 02, 2021 A bipartisan group of House members advanced the Farm Workforce Modernization Act of 2021 out of the U.S. House of Representatives on March 18, 2021, with a vote of 247-174. As it awaits action in the Senate, Republicans in the Senate fear it would provide amnesty and not actually solve the labor shortages facing the ag sector. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack testified July 21 during the “Immigrant Farmworkers are Essential to Feeding America” Judiciary Committee hearing and shared the full economic contribution of the food and agriculture industries is estimated to be nearly $7 trillion and supporting more than 40 million jobs – nearly 20 million directly and more than 20 million in supplier industries.

Dems Push Two Immigration Bills That Would Flood The Border And Grant Mass Amnesty

In the midst of a 6.3 percent civilian unemployment rate and the recovery from harsh lockdown restrictions, Democrats are aiming to provide lifelong work permits to more than 5 million migrants in the U.S. illegally. The House will vote this week on both the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, H.R. 1603, as well as the American Dream and Promise Act, H.R. 6. Both would effectively grant amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants, with H.R. 6 specifically granting permanent amnesty to an estimated 320,000 people and those under the age of 19. H.R. 1603 would provide green cards, work permits, and a path to citizenship for migrants who have worked in the agricultural sector part-time or more in the last two years.
