City of Long Beach, CA (via Public) / Long Beach Public Library Expands Tech To-Go Program

07/16/2021 | Press release | Distributed by Public on 07/16/2021 19:38 Long Beach Public Library Expands Tech To-Go Program Long Beach, CA - The Long Beach Public Library (LBPL)is expanding its new Tech To-Go program, a Chromebook computer and MiFi hotspot lending service launched in April 2021. The pandemic has demonstrated how important digital access is as so many of us have transitioned to school and work online. This program helps directly address the digital divide in Long Beach and supports the day-to-day technology needs of our students and residents, said Mayor Robert Garcia. Our public libraries are such an important resource to help bridge the gap, and we are proud to be able to make these kinds of services a priority in our city.

How Plant-Based Community Fridges Are Providing Access to Free Food

How Plant-Based Community Fridges Are Providing Access to Free Food “Take what you need, leave what you can.”   Community fridges, or “freedges,” are organizer and volunteer-led refrigerators that provide free food to their communities. The concept has been around for several years, but is surging in popularity as a way for people to support each other through food insecurity exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This mutual aid initiative is predicated on the philosophy to “take what you need, leave what you can.” How does it work? Community fridges are run, cleaned, and serviced by organizers and volunteers. Anyone with the means and desire can contribute to a community fridge. Community members can purchase groceries with the fridge in mind, or share items from their pantry or refrigerator that would otherwise go to waste.
