Gar Beckstead dies at age 82, leaves legacy on Useppa Island

Gar Beckstead, who threaded the needle with Useppa Island, both developing and preserving it since first laying eyes on it in 1976, leaves the legacy of a reclaimed paradise, his longtime friends said. Beckstead, who died at the age of 82 on Feb. 16, transformed Useppa Island into both a modern resort and a haven for preserving its history as a long-ago enclave for native Americans, who lived there going back 10,000 years. “Gar Beckstead was a brilliant, innovative man who was devoted, head, heart, soul, to Useppa Island,” said Randy Wayne White, a novelist and creator of the Doc Ford character and restaurants. “In the early 1980s, he rescued Useppa from ruin. He restored yet transformed the island into one of the most beautiful small treasures in the state.
