Después de trabajar en el sector público en el gobierno de Cesar Gaviria, llegando incluso a ser ministro de Educación, Alberto Calderón Zuleta dio un giro y terminó haciendo una exitosa carrera internacional en el sector de hidrocarburos y minería. Alcanzó a ser el CEO de Orica Mining Services, el líder mundial en fabricación de explosivos comerciales y sistemas de voladura para los mercados de minería, canteras, petróleo y gas y construcción, cargo del que se retiró en febrero de este año, para dar un nuevo giro al ser nombrado CEO de la surafricana Ashanti Gold, la tercera empresa minera de oro más grande del mundo.
