A HIGHBRIDGE function venue is to close, following a tough year of business amid the Covid-19 pandemic. The Oaktree, which is located at Edithmead, is currently owned by the Hancock family, but they have made the decision to sell up after 13 years. While new owners have been found, they are in a different business sector to that of hospitality. Until being forced to close in March 2020, the venue catered for weddings, parties, business conferences, funerals and other events. But with large events still some time away under the gradual easing of lockdown restrictions, it has become increasingly challenging for the family business to continue. ....
Pandemic prompts owners of Highbridge speedway track to put their licence on hold Speedway racing won’t be taking place at the Oak Tree Arena on the outskirts of Highbridge during 2021 following a decision by the track’s owners this week to put their licence on hold. Somerset Speedway has announced a decision not to declare their intent to compete in the 2021 season amid ongoing financial concerns caused by the ongoing Covid pandemic. Club promoter Debbie Hancock said in a statement: “It is with a truly heavy heart that Dad, Garry and I have reached the decision to put our licence on hold, and we have informed our fellow promoters at this week’s Annual General Meeting of that fact.” ....
