The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) sold dollars near the start of the spot trading session and also intermittently stepped in during the day, traders said.
The rupee closed at 83.25, little changed from its close at 83.2450 in the previous session. The currency traded in a narrow 83.2450 to 83.27 range in the spot session.
Slightly lower crude oil prices - falling on the hopes that the U.S. would ease sanctions on Venezuela - aided the local currency earlier in the spot trading session.
