homosexual rights movement or
gay liberation movement, civil rights movement that advocates equal rights for gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender persons; seeks to eliminate sodomy laws barring homosexual acts between consenting adults; and calls for an end to discrimination against gay men, lesbians, and transgender persons in employment, credit, housing, public accommodations, and other areas of life.
Gay rights prior to the 20th century
Religious admonitions against sexual relations between same-sex individuals (particularly men) long stigmatized such behaviour, but most legal codes in Europe were silent on the subject of homosexuality. The judicial systems of many predominantly Muslim countries invoked Islamic law (Sharīʿah) in a wide range of contexts, and many sexual or quasi-sexual acts including same-sex intimacy were criminalized in those countries with severe penalties, including execution. ....

The University of Reading has paid tribute to His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who died on 9 April and whose funeral is tomorrow (17 April).
Extending condolences on behalf of the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Robert Van de Noort, paid tribute to the Duke, who was an Honorary Graduate of the University and Honorary Life Member of Reading University Students’ Union.
Professor Van de Noort said: “The thoughts of the students, colleagues and community of the University of Reading are with Her Majesty The Queen and members of the Royal Family as they mourn the death of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. ....

Nancy Mitford, a regular visitor to Long Crichel, a Queen Anne rectory in Dorset, called the house “a prose factory” and its owners “the Brontës”. For Rosamond Lehmann, a visit was one of her “treats and pleasures”. Ben Nicolson, the elder son of Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson, said that “Crichel is almost too good to be true… it seems to me the ideal house.” It was the last of the great English literary salons. ....
