WHO Backs China Jab; Singapore Entry Approvals Cut: Virus Update

Record Daily Deaths in India; WHO Backs China Jab: Virus Update Bloomberg 2 hrs ago (Bloomberg) India reported more than 4,000 single-day coronavirus deaths for the first time as the nation battles the world’s worst outbreak. China’s Sinopharm Group won World Health Organization backing for its Covid-19 vaccine, paving the way for a wider rollout in countries scrambling for jabs. Singapore will reduce entry approvals for foreign workers, and delay the arrival of many already approved, to reduce imported cases. Thailand posted more than 2,400 new cases, the highest single-day tally in two weeks. The country is in the grip of a third wave, the worst since the pandemic began. New cases and deaths have almost tripled since the end of March.

Brazil Hits 400,000 Deaths as Shortage Blunts Vaccination Effort Bloomberg 4/29/2021 Rachel Gamarski and Caroline Aragaki (Bloomberg) Brazil recorded more Covid-19 deaths in the first four months of the year than in all of 2020, breaching the 400,000 mark as it grapples with a shortage of shots that’s threatening mass vaccinations. The Health Ministry reported 3,001 deaths on Thursday, pushing the total to 401,186 since the pandemic started a little over a year ago. It’s the second highest tally globally, trailing only the U.S. Cases rose by 69,389 in the past 24 hours, pushing the toll to 14.6 million, behind India and the U.S.

Brazil looks for vaccines as India's crisis slows deliveries | Latin America News

Brazil is struggling to find vaccines to tackle one of the world’s worst Covid-19 outbreaks as resurgent outbreaks and supply shortages among top providers slow the pace of deliveries. Foreign Minister Carlos Franca told lawmakers Wednesday he’s seeking vaccines from a variety of partners, including 30 million doses from China’s Sinopharm, plus 8 million doses of the India-produced AstraZeneca shot as well as any U.S. surplus. The problem, he added, is the pandemic’s upsurge in India and tight supplies globally have left Brazil scrambling for doses. “The lack of vaccines and other medicine is not a problem only for Brazil the virus is harming the whole world,” Franca said during a session of the lower house’s foreign relations committee. “Who could have expected that India would face such an outbreak?”
