CHICAGO — Founded more than 500 years ago in the Punjab region of South Asia, the Sikh faith has more than 25 million adherents worldwide. There are some 500,000 Sikhs living in the U.S. today, with the first immigrating in the late 1800s.
Four of the eight victims in last week’s deadly mass shooting at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis were Indian Americans of the Sikh faith. Now, activists, artists and political leaders are calling for solidarity and acknowledgement.
At a virtual vigil for the victims of the FedEx mass shooting thousands mourned the loss of life. ....

Washington, D.C. On Wednesday, members of Congress and experts on national security, faith, technology policy, and civil rights issues called for a renewed national commitment to combat white supremacist violence.
The comments came during a joint event sponsored by the Center for American Progress and the McCain Institute for International Leadership. Washington, D.C. White supremacist violence in the United States is not new, but in recent years, it has become a top national security threat. In October 2020, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security concluded that racially and ethnically motivated violent extremists, particularly white supremacist extremists, are “the most persistent and lethal threat in the Homeland.”
To confront this issue, the Center for American Progress and the McCain Institute for International Leadership collaborated on a yearlong research project, convening a coalition of more than 150 leaders from the communities most affected by white supremacist violence, along with civil rights advocates and experts in law enforcement, counterterrorism, and national security.
