Why Alabama might not be the last state to cut the sales tax on groceries

Alabama, Mississippi and South Dakota are the last three states to tax grocery sales at the fullest amount without offering any credits or rebates. Lawmakers in Mississippi and South Dakota have punted on the issue this spring, leaving Alabama with a chance to avoid being the last to make a change.

Alabama governor signs medical marijuana legislation

Alabama governor signs medical marijuana legislation KIM CHANDLER, Associated Press FacebookTwitterEmail MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey signed medical marijuana legislation Monday as Republican opposition to the issue faded after decades of debate. The program will allow people with a qualifying medical condition to purchase medical marijuana with the recommendation of a doctor. The approval came eight years after a medical marijuana bill in 2013 won that year’s so-called “Shroud Award” for the “deadest” bill of the year in the House of Representatives. Ivey called signing the bill an “important first step” and thanked the sponsors of the bill for their work.

What's in Alabama's medical marijuana bill?

What’s in Alabama’s medical marijuana bill? Updated May 10, 2021; A bill to allow people with chronic pain and more than a dozen other conditions to seek relief with medical marijuana products is a step away from becoming law in Alabama. The Legislature passed the bill by a two-to-one margin, with support from lawmakers in both parties. About 40% of Republican legislators voted against it. The bill went to Gov. Kay Ivey, who could sign it into law. Ivey said last week the 102-page bill was under review. Ivey commended the sponsors of the legislation and said she hoped to sign it.
