starting point begins right now. welcome, everybody. starting point this morning, angry, united. bracing for protests in michigan as the state is poised to become the most unionized right to work state. as many as 10,000 unionized workers expected at the state capitol to voice their disapproval of the measure. some of them teachers, two detroit area school districts shut down for the day as hundreds of teachers plan to join the protest. president obama brought it up during a trip to a daimler truck factory in redford, michigan. this is what he said. this so-called right to work law, they don t have to do with economics, everything to do with politics. what they are really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money. alison kosik. what s the latest on the protests? protestsers starting to gather behind me. signs in hand, even the inflatable, a common theme when you see unions protest, the rats. thousands are hoping their voices will be heard. final

astronomers. did you feel that? it happened. i hear that s super dangerous. good morning and welcome to early start. as 5:00 a.m. in the east. up first, it was an afternoon of horror for holiday shoppers in suburban portland. police say 10,000 people were inside the clackamas town center when a gunman opened fire. mass chaos followed. three were dead, including the gunman, and a young woman left critically wounded. the mall is supposed to be a place that we can all take our families, feel comfortable that this is a great place, especially the hole diday seaso like this. these things aren t supposed to happen. let s get right to the scene. dan, what can you tell us? reporter: well, the main question this morning, and it s really the question anytime you have one of these shootings, is who was the shooter, what was the motive, and were any of the victims targeted or was it simply random. at this point we don t know any of that. when we do know is it started about

hazy, sunshine this afternoon. things cool down quickly, as well this evening, as we drop into the 50s. carolyn. thank you, francis. we begin with breaking news out of san francisco where a woman has been fatally shot near the sundance kabooky theater. it happened on post street between fillmore and webster streets. the woman was taken to the hospital. she had at least one gunshot wound. again, she has now died. no word yet on what s going on in terms of a motive or suspects. this morning new hope for the family of an oakland girl declared brain dead by doctors. the family now says they have new option on where to move 13-year-old jaw jahi mcmath. they have been in talks with facilities. of new concern now, how to pay for it all. abc7 news reporter has the latest. reporter: jahi s family is trying to line up a facility that will keep her on life support. her mother is telling abc news she has faith her during will cover. she s alive to me. she s not dead. her fami

members of the house voting on the bill that passed the senate earlier that bill passed the senate by a vote of 81-18 with tremendous bipartisan support. obviously now it s in the house of representatives. we expect it to also clear that chamber. we re wondering we re trying to see if the bill will pass with overwhelming support or not. john boehner today urged his caucus to vote for it. the four main things that this bill will do, it will reopen the government, and fund it through january 15th. it will raise the nation s debt ceiling until february 7th. it will basically tell both sides, republicans, democrats in both chambers to come together and try and work towards a long-term budget agreement and will also provide back pay to all of the furloughed workers that have been out of work for the past 16 days, and in terms of obamacare, only one provision of a very watered down strike, basically telling those people who want subsidiaries once it goes through both chambers, it
