You know that old addage, sticks and stones can break my bones but words can never hurt me, i categorically reject that. We have seen kids quite literally take their own lives as a result of Cyber Bullying and that is why i did a Remarkable Partnership in south florida with local Law Enforcement who had gone into schools talking about bullying, including Cyber Bullying and giving people concrete examples of things of situations they saw, it was remarkable. And that is why we will continue to do that work. So i hope today as we move forward you will understand that we are in this together with you at the department of justice. The president s and the secretarys real commitment to this to ensure that we have some resources for innovative programs that are happening across the country for those local programs that are really changing the way their schools function and their communities see their schools and promoting those and scaling them up. Very quickly because i know we want to move on, the attorney general launched a defending childhood initiative, i know theres a lot of philanthropy in the room, we want to work in partnership to find those innovative programs. There was a jurisdiction in north dakota that got a grant to implement some of the restoretive justice programs, the superintendent mentioned those. Those have shown real potential for doing good things in terms of preventing recidivism in the bullying context. You know, im telling you, ive done a lot of hate crimes cases and i know todays bullies are often tomorrows civil rights defendants. If we simply wait for that train wreck to occur and prosecute, thats going to be like trying to cure cancer by building more hospitals. We cant do it that way. Weve got to get into prevention mode. Weve got to figure out strategies to prevent, weve got to empower School Districts, weve got to empower parents, weve got to empower bystanders. When my daughter was bullied in 7th grade, her friends saw it, but they were paralyzed. They didnt know what to do and they did nothing. I dont begrudge thipl for that, they are wonderful kids, but they didnt have the tools to do anything about it. So we work on those issues and we work on those and our local School District was remarkable in their reaction.
