CLARKSVILLE, TN – In the spring of 1979, a small group of students successfully challenged their school in a landmark court case – the Student Coalition for Gay Rights v. Austin Peay State University. They were fighting for their right to exist as a student group after receiving official notice that their new organization “had no place at Austin Peay.”
The students’ activism allowed their young club to become an official APSU student organization – now the Gender and Sexuality Alliance – which recently celebrated its 42nd anniversary.
About 10 years after that court case, another group of student activists questioned the prevailing climate at Austin Peay.
