River dredging near Chernobyl could send radioactive waste into water table, scientists warn

River dredging near Chernobyl could send radioactive waste into water table, scientists warn Salon 12/29/2020 © Provided by Salon Chernobyl; nuclear radiation A sign warning of radiation, taken in Pripyat, Ukraine, April 2017. OVER 30 years after the nuclear disaster of Chernobyl, the city of Pripyat is exactly as it was the day it was evacuated. On the afternoon of April 27, 1986 a population of almost 50,000 abandoned the city following a catastrophic nuclear accident. Andreas Jansen / Barcroft Media via Getty Images In 1986, a reactor accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine led to an uncontrolled nuclear chain reaction that is still considered to be the worst nuclear disaster in history. The fallout from the Chernobyl explosion has made hundreds of square miles around the now-uninhabited town a veritable dead zone, void of humans.

Dredging of the Pripyat river poses danger of Chernobyl radioactivity to drinking water of 8 million people.

Guardian 23rd Dec 2020, The river running past the Chernobyl nuclear reactor is being dredged to create an inland shipping route, potentially resurfacing radioactive sludge from the 1986 disaster that could contaminate drinking water for 8 million people in Ukraine, scientists and conservationists have warned. The dredging of the Pripyat began in July and is part of an international project to create the 2,000km (1,240-mile) long E40 waterway linking the Baltic and Black seas, passing through Poland, Belarus and Ukraine. The river – which snakes within 2.5km of the reactor responsible for the world’s worst nuclear disaster – has already been dredged in at least

Remember Chernobyl? A new waterway could bring nuclear runoff back to the surface

Remember Chernobyl? A new waterway could bring nuclear runoff back to the surface The waterway would fo from Poland to Ukraine and it would be Europe s longest one A river running past the Chernobyl nuclear reactor is currently being dredged to create a 2,000-kilometer shipping route linking the Baltic and Black seas. The project was widely questioned by scientists and conservationists, who claim radioactive sludge from the 1986 nuclear disaster could resurface due to the work. It would be Europe’s longest waterway, stretching 25 times the length of the Panama Canal. Government ministries and a coalition of organizations are pushing through the construction. Small vessels can already pass through it.
