Buffalo City's multimillion-rand Leighandre 'Baby Lee' Jegels Recreational Park, commonly called the Stoep, has been targeted by cable thieves and vandals. Quigney Ratepayers Association chair Satish Nair said he noticed one of the lamp posts had been vandalised and alerted law enforcement officials and the Buffalo City Metropolitan Development Agency (BCMDA).
Quigney was once again plunged into chaos at the weekend with underage drinking and related crimes, with ambulances pelted with bottles when they tried to respond to calls at the beachfront. One teenager was stabbed to death, another hit by a car and a 12-year-old girl was reportedly raped. A car plunged into a building and 15 underage teenagers were rushed to hospital for suspected alcohol poisoning after a night of mayhem on East London’s beachfront on Saturday.
The Buffalo City Metropolitan Development Agency’s factually incorrect sign boards along the beachfront in Quigney, East London, have not been removed or corrected despite an undertaking by the agency to do so two weeks ago. The Dispatch reported on February 5 that one of the nine boards contained incorrect information relating to the isiXhosa history while another had the wrong picture of the Beach Hotel.
While Hole in the Wall attracts thousands of tourists to the Wild Coast, the East London beachfront is pocked by deep, trash-filled sinkholes that pose a risk to residents and visitors alike. To add to the disgrace, a stinking sewer manhole, less than 20m from the newly opened Baby Lee Jegels Recreation Park, has disgusted visitors to the area since 2022.
Fed up with the increasing crime and car washers who have established themselves in the parking areas on East London's beachfront, Quigney Ratepayers Association are taking matters into their own hands. The Association's chair, Satish Nair, joins Daron Mann and discusses their initiative in this episode.
