A Jamnagar sessions court sentenced Sanjiv Bhatt, who was the additional superintendent of police in the Jamnagar district in 1990, in June 2019. Then police constable Pravinsinh Zala too was sentenced to life imprisonment.
In 1990, one of the 133 people detained during a communal riot in Jamjodhpur town died in a hospital after he was released from custody, allegedly due to custodial torture. Seven policemen were on trial and 2 were found guilty.
As a High Court judge, Justice Shah had in 2011 refused to set aside a trial court ruling rejecting an application for deferment of framing of charges in the custodial death case Bhatt was convicted in.
