Winter Tracking Workshop

Winter may be here, but most of our wildlife friends are still around! In fact, it’s easier than ever to find them. Join us at Sandhill Wildlife Area to learn how we can track and identify wildlife using their footprints that appear in the snow. Learn about all the different tracks you can see in and around Sandhill in the morning, followed by going out and finding some tracks. Please dress for the weather and bring your lunch and snacks. Meet in the Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center. Class is limited to 20 participants.

Prescribed Burns as a Management Tool Workshop

How do we use fire as a wildlife management technique? What goes into a burn plan? Do you have any other BURNING questions that you were curious about? Join us at Sandhill Wildlife Area as we welcome The Nature Conservancy who will help us learn about prescribed burns as a management tool. Find out how controlled fire is used to improve or change habitat and get info on available resources, what is needed, who can/will do it, safety, and legal considerations. Meet in the Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center. Class is limited to 30 participants.

Geocaching 101

Want to find your favorite new outdoor recreational activity? How about Geocaching! Join Jacque Cody, Member of the Wisconsin Geocaching Association, to learn the fundamentals of geocaching. We will learn what you need to get started, what caches can look like, and we’ll get the chance to go outside to search for geocaches! Please bring a GPS or smartphone if you have one. Meet in the Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center. Class is limited to 25 participants. Preregistration is required before July 12th along with a $5 registration fee per person.

Walking Stick Workshop

Do you enjoy using a hiking stick while hiking? Now you can make your own! Join the Friends of Sandhill to decorate provided natural hardwood sticks using wood burners, paints, feathers, beads, and much more. This intergenerational activity is great for the whole family, and all are welcome. Young participants under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Meet in the Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center. There are 2 sessions for this event on Sat, June 10, 2023. One session is from 8:30am to 12:00pm and one session is from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. Class is limited to 8 participants per class.

Universe in the Park (Night Skies)

Did you know that Sandhill Wildlife Area has one of the darkest night skies in the state of Wisconsin? To witness an extraordinary view of space, join UW-Madison astronomers as they present our “Universe in the Park”. The astronomers will briefly present information and observations about the night sky, the moon, and other celestial objects. After that, you are invited to attend the star party where you will get a chance to view objects in the sky through telescopes and chat with expert astronomers. Meet in the Sandhill Outdoor Skills Center.
