Irvine Ranch landmarks reopen for Wilderness Access Days

Nature lovers can now return to the natural landmarks of Irvine Ranch with Wilderness Access Days, which had been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Irvine Ranch Conservancy, along with OC Parks and the city of Irvine, reopened the free public events last weekend with a public hike in Black Star Canyon.

Feb. 10 With the temperature in the mid 40s, birds at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine soaked in the warm rays of the early morning sun from their various perches around the 300 acres of wetland near the Upper Newport Bay.
A red-shouldered hawk sat contently in a tree as an osprey brought another stick to it’s nesting platform nearby.
Just down the trail, a great blue heron shared a log with a couple of ducks. A snowy egret peacefully surveying the area from atop a sycamore tree was chased from its perch by another snowy egret as various ducks floated in the mirror-like water reflecting the leafless trees above on yet another winter morning in Orange County.
