In response to devastating wildfires that continue to ravage the Northwest Territories, PSAC has donated $75,000 to bolster the $75,000 donation from the Union of Northern Workers (UNW), a component of PSAC, to the United Way Northwest Territories Emergency Response. An evacuation order has been issued for Yellowknife, a city of 20,000 people. Fires are not showing signs of slowing down.
A program that aims to deploy small air quality monitoring sensors in all N.W.T. communities is about halfway toward its goal providing residents real time information about how clean the air is outside.
Temperatures hit 30 C, while smoke from wildfires in the region made Norman Wells, N.W.T., the most polluted municipality in the country, according to IQAir, a Swiss technology company that monitors air quality around the world.
