Mount Pleasant, IA- The Jefferson County Attorney's Office has completed a review of an investigation of an officer-involved shooting. TV Station KTVO reports that Jefferson County Attorney Chauncey Moulding was asked to conduct a review of the incident, and determined that Henry County deputy Carlos Lopez used appropriate action to disarm 33-year-old Samantha Shumaker. On December 3rd, Mount Pleasant Police Officers and Henry County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in the 700 block of Main Street, where a man calling for help was being held at gunpoint. Upon arrival, Officers encountered a man calling for help from the bathroom window. He was able to escape through the window. Shumaker then pointed the gun at the man and threatened to shoot him. Shumaker refused multiple orders to raise her hands, and Lopez fired five shots, striking Shumaker once in the arm.
Mount Pleasant, IA- The Iowa Department of Public Safety has identified the Henry County Sheriff's Deputy that shot a Mount Pleasant woman in the arm on December 3rd. TV Station KTVO reports that Henry County Deputy Carlos Lopez is the one who shot the suspect, Samantha Shumaker in the arm Saturday. Lopez is remaining on Critical Incident Leave pending the outcome of an investigation. Authorities were dispatched Saturday, December 3rd, to a residence in Mount Pleasant for reports of domestic abuse where Shumaker was holding a man at gunpoint. Shumaker was seen brandishing a firearm in the direction of Law Enforcement and her boyfriend during the incident. Lopez fired a shot at Shumaker, striking her in the arm, after she refused officer's orders to put the gun down.
Mount Pleasant, IA- A Mount pleasant woman who was shot by police on Saturday, December 3rd, is now facing charges. TV Station KTVO reports that Samantha Shumaker of Mount Pleasant is charged with False Imprisonment, Domestic Abuse Assault, and Display or Use of a Weapon. At about 10 PM Saturday, Mount Pleasant Police and Henry County Sheriff's Deputies were called to a residence in the 700 block of Main Street, where a man calling for help was being held at gunpoint. Upon arrival, officers found the man calling for help from inside the house. He was able to escape through a bathroom window. One of the officers saw Shumaker holding a gun, and shot her in the arm. A preliminary hearing for Shumaker is scheduled for December 16th. The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave.
