(Meg McKinney / Alabama NewsCenter) Thinking back on the tremendous devastation and death toll caused by the 62 tornadoes that swept Alabama on April 27, 2011, Robin Skagen said there’s only one word to describe that dark day: “surreal.” RELATED: Skagen, an American Red Cross disaster action team responder at the time, was one of the first on the ground after a tornado swept through the Tuscaloosa area early that morning. It was her job to help assess the damage so the Red Cross could determine ways it could assist the victims.

Salvation Army provides financial assistance to local tornado victims

From The Tribune staff reports BIRMINGHAM The Salvation Army of Greater Birmingham’s continues to assist those affected by the Jan. 25 tornado that struck the Fultondale and Center Point communities.  The organization’s emergency response to the tornado outbreak has transitioned to a long-term recovery phase.  After the storm hit, the Salvation Army was on the ground providing hygiene items, food, hydration, and emotional care to tornado survivors, first responders, and volunteers. The group is continuing to serve those affected by providing short-term financial assistance to qualifying households impacted by the storm.  According to communications manager Melissa Snow-Clark, the Salvation Army may help with food, home insurance deductibles, basic furniture, appliances and first month’s rental fee to relocate those who lost rental housing.
