Preserving cowboy culture: Annual poetry, music gathering set May 3-5 in Salado

SALADO â âRed River Valleyâ and similar cowboy ballads floated Saturday morning across the grounds of Barrow Brewing Co., all part of the Salado Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering.
Harmonica lessons and a writerâs rendezvous at the Salado Museum would come in the afternoon, followed by an evening concert at Heritage Country Church, 9929 Lark Trail in Salado. The event concludes with a worship service at the church at 10 a.m. today.
Bill Kinnison, president of the Salado Historical Society, was among those seated near the outdoor stage and taking in the singing and poetry recitation. He handed out a brochure that included a map of the villageâs historic sites, from Salado Plaza to College Hill Drive.
With the number of events happening in the area this weekend, families are sure to find something to do together to celebrate moms and mother figures. Check out some of the Military Spouse Appreciation Day events, Motherâs Day Brunch at Club Hood, the Jack Rabbit 5K/10K Run, or grab dinner and drinks while enjoying some local live music.

The Fort Hood Spouses’ Club Golf Scramble will be May 7 at the Courses of Clear Creek, 52381 Battalion Ave., Fort Hood. Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. and the shotgun start will be at 9 a.m. Registration is $75 per person and includes golf fees, a swag bag, breakfast, lunch from Monty’s Old School BBQ, and beer. Growing up in Central Texas, we all learned about the Chisolm Trail. I remember spending summers at Camp Tahuaya and seeing the wagon ruts, and some of my best memories are of sitting around a fire cooking, telling stories, and singing with my friends the way the cowboys of old did.

The reason I bring it up is that a fantastic event is coming to Salado that will bring that rich cowboy history and heritage to life, as cowboy poets and musicians gather for a display of the spirit of the American West.
The Salado Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering will take place across several locations in Salado Village May 6 through 9.
