A loyola professor. This took place at fords theater. It is about 50 minutes. Good afternoon. My name is michael burlingame. I teach at the university of illinois springfield and i bring you greetings from the holy land. When i saw this set, i was startled. When i came into the theater, i saw the title of the show that is being done tonight, 110 in the shade. I assumed it was a musical about washington dc in august. It kind of fit. It is my pleasure to introduce thomas carson, professor of philosophy at Loyola University in chicago. He is a graduate of Saint Olaf College and brown university. Professor carsons teaching and Research Focus on ethics, as his book titles suggest. The status of morality, value and the good life, and lying and deception. Professor carson has a lifelong interest in history, which led him to write his most recent book, lincolns ethics. I had the pleasure of reading it in manuscript. I commend it to your attention. I must admit, i was a bit skeptical when infor

To family and friends. She also penned among those letters about 100 letters to jacob bun, a springfield merchant and an old friend of her husband with whom she had left her personal finances in the states. On december 12th, 1876, she wrote a letter to him that i think is pretty typical of these businesstype letters, and i think it also demonstrates marys remarkably clear mind at a time when her son robert and many others believed she was severely mental unstable. I like this letter because it illustrates marys Mental Health and intellect and it reveals her care and concern for family members back home and it demonstrates that even in her Twilight Years in a location far removed from home, she retained her passion and interest in american politics. I must admit, i was a bit skeptical when informed that i philosopher, not an historian or political scientist, was writing about lincoln. I have long shared the view expressed by henry adams, who said philosophers offer unintelligible answers to unsolvable problems. I assure you that lincolns ethics offers highly intelligible answers to eminently soluble problems of great interests to students of our 16th president. Please join me in welcoming tom carson. When they got off the bus they were the mercy of this crowd who then proceeded to attack them even further. The deal that had been worked out with local Law Enforcement and the segregationists was evident 15 minutes they would have 15 minutes before Law Enforcement intervened. After about a 15 minute point a local Law Enforcement officer pulled his weapon and fired a shot. That is what stopped the attack. In the meantime the trailways bus arrived an hour later. They dont know until they arrived that the Greyhound Bus was already attacked. The interesting thing about the trailways bus, unlike the Greyhound Bus, several segregationists had gotten on the bus in atlanta. They were riding from atlanta. They had not only harassed the atlanta, the bus from but they had also beaten several of the freedom riders while on the bus. The trailways bus was able to continue on into birmingham for yet another mob formed and was waiting for that bus to arrive. While this was going on there were a group

Television, on cspan, are real people. When we saw president obama, perhaps the thing that most stood out to me is he had bags under his eyes. Hes a real person dealing with real things. Sunday night on q a type High School Students from around the country talk with us about their experiences in the week long government and leadership program, plus their plans for the future. The students met with members of the executive, judicial, and legislative branchs of the government, plus military and media representatives. Washington post journalist mr. Jonathan capehart came to talk to us, and i really loved the insight he gave us of kind of being the outside source reporting back to us and the electorate about whats going on in our government. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is the most inspirational people we have met this week. I want to be in the Legal Profession or possible a senator. I understand the need for bipartisanship at times, but i think it is important that politics go to washington with a
