and a little over 30 minutes into the flight they cost contact. we want to go now to mary schiavo and david soucie to talk a little bit about this plane it is. it is trigana air. this is a small regional jet. our renee marsh did some research on this. according to aviation safety.net, this particular airline, in july of 2007 the e.u. added this airline to its list of banned carriers because of safety oversight issues. what issues normally would warrant a ban like that, mary? in the case of airlines out of indonesia, there were two main ones. one was that indonesia itself had ineffective safety
the bottom of what happened and why? absolutely. i think this is probably the tip of the iceberg. and it s amazing that our own federal aviation administration was almost you know clairvoyant. they re not usually very protective or clairvoyant. but when they rated indonesia, and the newest ratings came out just in december. indonesia was rated in par with bangladesh. there are only a couple countries that don t meet the standards and indonesia is one of them. one of them do they provide adequate safety for the airlines. and one of the things they fell down in was safety oversight over approvals and certification. here that would appear to be the case. they did not police who had approval to fly routes. i think we ll see much more this in the coming days it certainly
ship may have had some serious steering issues a couple of weeks ago before obviously the incident. that would be a red flag, right? well, yes, in several areas. ships operate today under a three-tier safety oversight. and the third tier would be international safety management. a report i looked today in the korean news agency. saying there was a report two weeks ago of a steering loss caused by a power failure. and it had been reported in writing to the management, the company operator, and there is absolutely no evidence at all of the office following up on that. that steering failure could have happened again during this tragedy and been the root cause of the problem. but, again, you know, failure to follow up on reported

segment tonight, the terrible air crash in san francisco two killed and 200 others injured after asiana flight from south korea crash landed at the san francisco airport. right now it looks like pilot error as the korean based airline had a pilot with scant experience on the 777 in command of the aircraft. joining us now from san francisco the chairman of the national transportation safety board debra hersman. i know you are investigating and you have got to be careful about what you say or aviation experts we talked to believe it is pilot error because a lot of planes are coming and going without incident at san francisco that day and the video shows that the plane was going down. we already knew the speed was too late. too slow and all of that. what i want to know is how does the countries train their pilots properly train their properly. the federal aviation administration is responsible for safety
