The rise, fall and rise again of Usno | Daily Express Online - Sabah's Leading News Portal

IN the middle of last month, all of a sudden the United Sabah National Organisation (Usno) was accepted into Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), a coalition of the State’s governing parties including PBS but excluding Umno and its BN partners.  I say all of a sudden because in the waiting list are three other Sabah political parties – KDM, LDP and PCS. But only Usno was accepted

Site for Jesselton is picked | Daily Express Online - Sabah's Leading News Portal

Nov 4, 1899  (North Borneo Herald) Mr Henry Walker, the Commissioner of Lands, recommended a narrow strip of coastal land between Tanjung Lipat and Tanjung Aru, to be the site for a deep water port on the mainland and a terminus for a railway line.  Walker was convinced it was a good place to start a town and the present proves him right – the strip of land became Jesselton, named after Sir Charles Jessel Bart, a vice chairman of the Chartered Company.  Jesselton (now Kota Kinabalu) was directly opposite Gaya, an island on which a settlement was started in 1881 and by January 1884, had a population of 400.  Gaya was the Chartered Company’s administrative centre for the west coast but the island was abandoned for Jesselton. Rebel leader Mat Salleh looted and burnt Gaya to the ground in 1897.  Malaysian Scouts were  placed under one umbrella Nov 3, 1964  (Daily Express) The Malaysian Boy Scouts Federation (the term “Boy”

Stephens closes Upko for unity | Daily Express Online - Sabah's Leading News Portal

Stephens dissolves Upko for bumiputra unity  1967: The United Pasokmomogun Kadazan Organisation (Upko) was dissolved at a five-hour Party congress at the Community Centre that was attended by more than 400 representatives throughout Sabah.  Its President Donald Stephens (pic) said the only road to bumiputra unity was to have one bumiputra Party and called on members to follow him in joining Usno.  He also suggested there be only one bumiputra Party for the whole of Malaysia and pledged loyalty to Usno President Tun Datu Mustapha, Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman, Deputy Tun Razak and the Alliance leaders.  He hoped the Sabah Indian Congress (SIC) and the Sabah Chinese Association (SCA) will help Upko return to the Sabah Alliance as Usno members.  Dato Ganie Gilong seconded the motion. Secretary-General Peter Mojuntin said he agreed only because he was convinced bumiputra unity was the key to future happiness, peace and prosperity of Sabahans.  Twent
