announcer: from nbc news world headquarters in new york, this is nbc nightly news with lester holt. good evening. there was high drama outside the white house late this afternoon when a confrontation between secret service and arnold man ended in gunfire. the secret service said an officer opened fire on the man wounding him after he approached a security checkpoint and pulled out a firearm. this all happening in play view of sightseers along the perimeter of the white house grounds and sent heavily armed secret service teams fanning out as the white house was placed on a security lockdown. jim miklaszewski was there and has late details for us. reporter: on what had been a serene sunny afternoon, the white house grounds suddenly looked like a war zone. shouts and shots fired rang out. secret service officers scrambled to their post. one with a sniper rifle atop the white house. a lone man brandishing a handgun walking to the southwest corner of the white house ground
