It’s not easy to choose a Most Embarrassing Week for the National Hockey League. I mean, this is the league that invited Nickelback to sing at its awards show.
But the Tom Wilson attacks on Pavel Buchnevich and Artemi Panarin, followed by the laughable $5,000 fine levied to Wilson, followed by a statement from the Rangers critical of the Department of Player Safety, followed by a serious $250,000 fine to the Rangers for telling the truth, followed by the firing of Rangers president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton, followed by Shayne Gostisbehere’s late and dangerous hit on Pittsburgh’s Mark Friedman and his laughable two-game suspension well, it was quite a week, even by NHL standards.
