Russian artist facing 8 years in jail over supermarket protest

Russian prosecutors on Wednesday demanded an eight-year prison sentence for artist Alexandra Skochilenko, who last year swapped supermarket price tags for statements criticising Moscow's military offensive in Ukraine, independent media reported.The 33-year-old artist and musician has been in detention since April last year, when she was arrested for changing labels in a Saint Petersburg supermarket with messages against Russia's large-scale intervention in Ukraine.

Prosecutors to ask Russian court to place Radio Free Europe journalist in custody

MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russian prosecutors will ask a judge at a court hearing on Friday to place detained Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) journalist Alsu Kurmasheva in custody, the court's press service reported. Alsu Kurmasheva, who works for RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service and holds U.S. and Russian passports, is accused of failing to register as a foreign agent after she entered Russia on May 20, her employer said on Thursday. Kurmasheva was temporarily detained by Russian security forces as she waited for her return flight on June 2.
