So we know the department of transportation oversees everything from airports and railways and ports, street servicing, bridges, tunnels and all of those things. Up to ev charging stations and most important, mayors, potholes. Potholes of the most important thing that we hear about oftentimes in our community. So please tell me how your experience as a former mayor helps to inform the work that youre doing now as secretary of transportation. Thank you. First of all mayor thanks for your leadership and thanks for hosting me today. Im always glad to be in the company of fellow mayors and former mayors. When i i was married it was my view that the level of government that has the most immediacy and in many ways the most direct visible consequence for americans is local government. Thats what i believe
John nichols, in his new book, has one of the most subtle ways of voter suppression. Negative advertising. What it does it doesnt convince you to vote for the other guy. It makes you so disgusted with not only the opponent, but they depict your candidate as being so bad, too, that you say a pox on both your houses, and you stay home and dont vote. My question is isnt it really a responsibility of all of us to tell our neighbors, you can just stay home and not vote because of what you hear on the airwaves, what you read in the newspapers. Ohio has 88 counties. In speaking that, starting with the issues we have in common four guns in urban areas it is a whole different discussion. Rural brothers and sisters. It is starting at those places where behalf that commonality about economic fairness, Economic Justice, where your children have a future. Because of the makeup of ohio, that forces us to do that. We cant really separate the two. We are trying very hard to bring that together a little more into leaf that into the narrative and weave that into the narrative. Wen with our party chairs, have found world leadership who will take that message back. We have the urban leadership and bringing those forces together, because we are the same in the struggle for good and for great. Say,erez i just wanted to as someone who is from rur
That also includes voter rights. It also includes that. So just because you are a dream activist doesnt mean you can be advocating for brothers in mr. Zukin about because we are voting for that. My vote counts five times for four dreamers they can though. We have to build coalitions and everyone is making a difference and talking about that and i think its right that the candidate level. [applause] it is really repetition. There is no magic to this. We have to continue to tell this story ever a single year even if we are not just them saying it and over, we have to make sure it is the great equalizer. That is real. And so, in doing that, my good friend Christine Pelosi said in some of her training if you dont respect me, dont expect me. And for a lot of communities of color or a lot of poorer communities, they dont feel like folks whove been elected to office care about them or their issues. That is the bottom line.
