More than 100 visitors ventured down into the cave to listen to the special Matariki performance. Discover Waitomo commercial manager Christine Mans said it was the first time in the tourist attraction’s 132-year history that Matariki was celebrated. “It was a huge privilege to hold the festival but particularly to be able to hold the concert in the cave. “It is a taonga for all of us, especially our hāpu in the area, that’s Ruapuha Uekaha, and we had to get special permission to use the cave for an event like this.”
