EBAA Holds First Sustainable Aviation Fuel Summit

 - April 20, 2021, 12:13 PM EBAA s inaugural Business Aviation SAF Summit, examined the whys and hows to increase the availability and use of the renewable fuel in Europe. Bringing together a slate of regulators, fuel producers, fuel dealers, aircraft operators, and OEMs, EBAA today hosted its first European Business Aviation Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Summit. The sessions explored business aviation’s commitment to the environment, detailing how among the several pillars aviation has identified as crucial to its sustainability, SAF is the most promising and most immediate tool available to embark on the industry’s path towards fulfilling its decarbonization goals. Frank Moesta, senior v-p of strategy and future programs with Rolls-Royce Deutschland, noted that while electrification and hydrogen will have their place, for medium- and long-range business jets, the gas turbine will not be displaced anytime soon. Thus, his company has been engaged in testing its engines at

University of Nottingham establishes Italian research base

Adam Beech The University of Nottingham is establishing a research base in Italy in a bid to strengthen its alliances with Europe’s aerospace leaders. Situated in the Campania region, the University of Nottingham Italy (UnIT) will allow its researchers to participate in high technology-readiness level (TRL) aerospace programmes and maintain access to industrial partners such as Leonardo, Airbus, Rolls-Royce Deutschland, Safran, Liebherr and Thales.   Serhiy Bozhko, director of the Institute for aerospace technology (IAT) at the university, said: I am extremely happy that our strong links and great history of cooperation with the Italian aerospace community has achieved a new strategic level with the establishment of University of Nottingham Italy.

Rolls-Royce conducts first tests of 100% sustainable aviation fuel in Pearl 700 engine for use in business jets

Rolls-Royce conducts first tests of 100% sustainable aviation fuel in Pearl 700 engine for use in business jets Rolls-Royce has conducted the first tests of 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in a business jet engine. The tests on its latest business aviation engine in development, the Pearl 700, in Dahlewitz, Germany, came just weeks after unblended SAF was successfully used for the first time in engine ground tests on a Trent 1000 engine in Derby, UK. SAFs tested on the Pearl 700 The Trent 1000 is a high-bypass turbofan engine produced that is one of the engine options for the Boeing 787. Rolls-Royce said that the test demonstrated once again that current engines for large civil and business jet applications can operate with 100% SAF as a full “drop-in” option, laying the groundwork for moving this type of fuel towards certification.

Rolls-Royce business jet engine goes green

This latest test took place at Rolls-Royce Deutschland’s HQ in Dahlewitz on the southern outskirts of Berlin, and featured a Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 operating on a 100 per cent SAF. The fuel was produced by low-carbon specialist World Energy in Paramount, California, sourced by Shell Aviation and delivered by SkyNRG. According to Rolls-Royce, this unblended fuel has the potential to reduce net CO2 lifecycle emissions by over 75 per cent compared to conventional jet fuel, with the possibility of further reductions in the future. (Credit: RR) “Sustainable aviation fuels have the potential to significantly reduce the carbon emissions of our engines and combining this potential with the extraordinary performance of our Pearl engine family brings us another important step closer to enabling our customers to achieve net zero carbon emissions,” said Dr Joerg Au, Chief Engineer – Business Aviation and Engineering Director at Rolls-Royce Deutschland.

Rolls-Royce Conducts 1st Tests of 100% Sustainable Aviation

Rolls-Royce Conducts 1st Tests of 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel for Use in Business Jets Rolls-Royce has conducted the first tests of 100% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in a business jet engine, as part of our ongoing ambition to play a leading role in enabling the sectors in which we operate reach net zero carbon by 2050. The tests on our latest business aviation engine in development, the Pearl 700, in Dahlewitz, Germany, come just weeks after unblended SAF was successfully used for the first time in engine ground tests on a Trent 1000 engine in Derby, UK. This test demonstrates once again that our current engines for large civil and business jet applications can operate with 100% SAF as a full “drop-in” option, laying the groundwork for moving this type of fuel towards certification. At present, SAF is only certified for blends of up to 50% with conventional jet fuel and can be used on all current Rolls-Royce engines.
