The cause of death was not published. Born Aug. 22, 1942 in Huntingdon, Tenn., Mann grew up singing country and gospel, and performing in talent shows as a boy. But the rise of Elvis Presley pointed a new direction for him, and it led to his first record, Gonna Rock and Roll Tonight, which he cut for Jaxson in 1957. A year later, through Carl Perkins drummer, W.S. Fluke Holland, he secured an audition for Memphis Sun Records, the home of Presley, Perkins and Johnny Cash. ....

Carl Mann died Wednesday at the age of 78 at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. “If you were around him, you’d think you’ve known him all of his life,” Huntingdon Mayor Dale Kelley said. “I’d say the best thing to me about Carl was the way he always treated me. He always treated me like we had been life long friends. I treasure his friendship,” musician Dave Mallard said. Those close to Carl Mann knew him not only for his musical talent, but his way of creating meaningful friendships. Mann was born and raised near Huntingdon, where he grew up with current Mayor Dale Kelley. ....
