Canton's new summer education, employment program to aid students

He was quite excited about it, his grandfather Michael Perry said. The 16-year-old and his grandfather attended orientation Thursday for the new program, which will allow Perry to recover academic credits and earn $11 an hour. Perry said he struggled in two classes this past school year while attending in-person during the pandemic. He plans to save his summer earnings in order to get his driver s license and a car. The program was established by the city of Canton, Canton City School District, Simply Youth, and Stark County Community Action Agency (SCCAA). It involves a three-hour morning academic session followed by lunch, and then students are bused to various work sites for three hours in the afternoon.

Area MLK Day celebrations adjust celebrations because of pandemic

Staff report CANTON  A virtual  Courage to Change series will replace the 29th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Mayors Breakfast this year.  The Greater Canton Martin Luther King Jr. Commission decided it was not feasible or safe to gather in person because of the COVID-19 pandemic, said member Krista Allison. Instead, conversational Zoom meetings will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday (Jan. 15), Feb. 12 and April 2.   The dates coincide with King s birth, Abraham Lincoln s birth and the day two days before King s assassination. The theme is connected to King s quote: Our Lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.
