Water restrictions shift from voluntary to mandatory

The new 20% reduction on treated and raw water is effective immediately. A resolution passed by the board prohibits irresponsible watering that results in runoff into neighboring properties or walkways. Additionally, customers may only wash their cars using a hose fitted with a shut-off nozzle as opposed to a device that continues to dispense water when not in use. The resolution also states that drinking water should only be made available upon request at restaurants and other eateries. Treated water customers must limit outdoor irrigation to three days a week. The resolution states that watering should take place before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. every day.

'Transformational': NID welcomes new manager, declares drought

Photo: Elias Funez It welcomed its new general manager Jennifer Hanson. And it declared a drought. Hanson, who previously served as Lincoln’s city manager, will be NID’s 15th general manager and the first woman to head the district in its 100-year history. Division 1 Director Ricki Heck said the board chose Hanson to replace interim General Manager Greg Jones because of her financial expertise evident in a robust resume and several positive recommendations. The Board of Directors unanimously vote for Jennifer Hanson to become the water district’s new general manager. Photo: Elias Funez NID Board President Chris Bierwagon noted the board’s transition to majority women for the first time in its century-long existence earlier this year, after Karen Hull replaced five-term Division 4 incumbent W. Scott Miller in the November 2020 election. Hull joined ranks with Division 1 Director Heck and Division 4 Director and NID Board Vice President Laura Peters.

Peter Van Zant: A new year at NID

The year 2020 was not a good one for a lot of us, and certainly not for the unfortunate souls and families impacted by the coronavirus. However, there is some good news on the local conservation front. One is that the Bear River between Rollins Reservoir and Lake Combie is still flowing unimpeded by the proposed Centennial Dam. Second, there are positive changes at the Nevada Irrigation District. To recap, the proposed Centennial Dam is a 275-foot-high dam with a 110,000 acre-feet capacity, flooding the popular Bear River Canyon recreation corridor with a $1,000,000,000 ($1 billion) price tag. Three of the original architects of the proposed dam left NID in 2020. General Manager Rem Scherzinger resigned, Director Nick Wilcox retired, and Director Scott Miller lost his seat in the 2020 election.

Making history: Water district election sets precedent with first female-majority board in 100 years

By Liz Kellar | Staff Writer Water from the Bear River flows through a stretch of Nevada County slated to be submerged due to the proposed Centennial Dam. Nevada Irrigation District’s new board members could decide the fate of project. Elias Funez This November, some of the most closely watched races in Nevada County revolved around the future of water, the Nevada Irrigation District and its hotly contested Centennial reservoir project. The race for two open seats could be seen as a vote not for the candidates themselves but for or against the dam. In the end, no clear mandate emerged after the November election. Incumbent Scott Miller lost to dam opponent Karen Hull in Division 3, but her counterpart in the Division 5 race, John Norton, lost to Rich Johansen.
