Man sentenced to 9 years in prison after evading arrest in 2017

Updated: 11:52 AM CDT April 30, 2021 TYLER, Texas On Thursday, April 28, Samuel Virgo was convicted by a jury of the 7th District Court of Smith County for the offense of Evading Arrest with a Vehicle. Virgo was sentenced to 9 years in prison with a $5,000 fine.  The offense, which took place on November 6, 2017, Virgo was traveling at an excess of 100 miles per hour on a motorcycle along Highway 69 towards Lindale. Smith County Deputy Fire Marshal Chad Hogue attempted to pull Virgo over. The pursuit continued to the intersection of I-20 and Highway 69 which was blocked by Detective Sherman Dollison with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office to stop the defendant.

Manhattan. the chopper pilot, richard vance, the lone survivor. may day, my day, may day. a desperate pilot of this helicopter sending a frantic man day call after losing altitude. amateur video capturing it plunging near the freezing river, and tipping over and taking on water. the pilot treated himself. the other five did not. tug boats rapidly arriving on the scene. emergency responders working desperately to help the passengers. the harnesses had to be cut and removed in order to get the folks off of this helicopter, which was upside-down and submerged. two were pronounced dead at the scene.

Ntsb will be here to begin its investigation today. as you mentioned, the horrible moment of impact here on the east river was caught on tape. this private sightseeing helicopter owned by liberty helicopter tours crashed about 11 minutes after departing new jersey. six people, including the pilot were on board. the pilot who who sources have identified to us as richard vance made a frantic may day call to laguardia tower and said his engine failed. he was able to free himself from that chopper. unfortunately his five passengers harnessed in. and trapped in frigid sub40-degree frigid water. recounted for us what it was like watching the pilot free himself. one person sort of climbed out of the helicopter and climbed onto the raft and was calling, screaming for help.

To confirm the identity of the pilot. he s 33-year-old richard vance, who has reportedly been flying helicopters for a long time according to family members, and is said to be cooperating with investigators today. bill: had this company had problems before, laura? reporter: we ve been looking into the safety record of liberty helicopters. it does promote itself as the largest and most experienced helicopter sight seeing helicopter service in the northeast. but there have been several accidents. you might remember we reported on this in 2009. there was a really bad crash. a liberty helicopter and a small plane collided above the hudson river when five italian tourists and the pilot were killed. in 2007 one of the companies fell 500 feet into the hudson river. but that pilot was able to save the seven passengers. ntsb will be on the scene shortly and we will bring you developments. bill: thank you starting us off in manhattan.
