Cardboard? The city of Ottawa has never seen so much cardboard.
In 2020, the city collected 16,451 tonnes of cardboard, a 29 per cent increase from the 12,775 tonnes the year before. And â who knows if this is good or bad? â the cardboard was worth a good deal more.
Shelley McDonald, the director of solid waste services, says there was a 33 per cent increase in the price per tonne for the recyclable material, from an average price of $86.40 in 2019 to $114.87 last year.
Given the extra volume and higher price, the city had revenues of $1.89 million from cardboard in 2020, up a whopping 71 per cent from the $1.1 million in 2019.
