New Coffee Shop Hires Adults With Disabilities

LEBANON, Ohio Less than 20% of people with disabilities in the U.S. are employed, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is why the Coffee Caravan in Lebanon wanted to help adults with disabilities, like Alex Gonzalez, learn the proper skills to get and keep a job.

» Severe obesity (Body Mass Index ≥ 40 kg/m2).
» Type 2 diabetes mellitus with hemoglobin A1c level greater than 7.5%.
Healthcare providers may also vaccinate individuals with developmental or other severe disabilities or illness if:
» The individual is likely to develop severe life-threatening illness or death from COVID-19 infection.
» Acquiring COVID-19 will limit the individual’s ability to get ongoing care or services vital to their well-being and survival.
» Providing adequate and timely COVID care will be particularly challenging as a result of the individual’s disability.
These include people with a range of physical and behavioral disabilities, such as people with serious mental illness and those with serious substance use disorder.

The Coffee Caravan is the first coffee shop in the area to focus on giving jobs to individuals with special needs.
Located in Lebanon, Ohio, the shop opened Monday. “They’re just people,” co-owner and manager Mark Titmas told WLWT.
“Everybody has ability, it’s just a question of what it is. That’s why one of the things we have on our shirts is ‘What’s Your Ability,’ because everybody has talents and skills and they have talents and skills that they can display here,” he noted.
The business began in 2018 as part of the Residential Community Care that advocates for the empowerment, employment, and dignity of individuals with developmental disabilities.
