leaders at odds over how to handle the ongoing conflict between israel and hamas. u.s. secretary state entity blinken met with foreign ministers from the middle east and jordan earlier today to discuss the conflict. leaders of egypt and jordan are strongly condemning israel s offensive and are demanding an immediate cease-fire. blinken opposes a cease-fire he is pushing for israel to allow pauses in its assault on gaza. united states believes all these efforts would be facilitated by humanitarian causes. we believe pauses can be a critical mechanism protecting civilians, getting aid in getting foreign nationals out. while still enabling israel to achieve its objective to defeat hamas. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is rejecting calls for temporary cease-fire saying the country s military will only pull back when hamas frees all of its hostages but he adds his country will continue to block fuel from entering the region. meanwhile u.s. state department is urging a
rules. you have this recall election, we don t often talk about school board recall elections making national news. but in this instance, we are, jake, because of what this illustrates as far as the national picture. take us inside of the race and the fallout from it today. reporter: well, hallie, this was an extremely unusual event. school children arriving today were arriving after a first in a generation historic city recall. and nobody has been recalled in this city in about 40 years and suddenly three commissioners are out. now, opponents excuse me supporters of the recall effort, those who wanted them out, said that essentially this was a matter of incompetence, that at a time when the city of san francisco was suing the school board, demanding a better plan for reopening school nds a safe way, that the school board was bothering with things like renaming a third of the schools to more culturally appropriate and sensitive names. and so we spoke to both you ll hear first fro
landslide vote in the hyper local politics playing out in that city and beyond. three school board commissioners voted out. the latest example of local political activism sweeping the nation. with more, here is jake ward. reporter: students in san francisco arriving the morning after a historic vote. three school board commissioners ousted in a once in a generation city recall. the city sued the board last year over lack of clear reopening plan following pandemic closures, and parents say their frustration grew when the board focused on renaming a third of the city schools, including this one. but the flashpoint for many was when the board decided to change the admissions process at this, the city s most prestigious high school from a merit based system to lottery based system. majority of students here are asian american, that seems to have drawn in many first time voters. we signed up 560 new voters, chinese, asian american voters in the last six weeks.
