Birders and non-birders alike love the Northern Cardinal. The singing of the male cardinal is a sure harbinger of early spring. To many birders, the cardinal has taken the mantle of announcing spring from the American Robin. Anyone walking outside in February and March, near the Red River in Fargo and Moorhead, can hear the love song of the male cardinal. This is true especially where there are nearby bird feeders with sunflowers seeds or safflower hearts.
