From opening an entirely vegan location in London to offering meat-free versions of every menu item in Germany, is Burger King looking to become a fully meatless fast-food chain?
Burger King Austria asks its customers if they want “regular or meat-based” whoppers as part of an innovative campaign that makes plant-based meat the norm.
V2Foods unveiled its plant-based patty in 2019 at Australian chain Hungry Jack’s a franchise brand of the Burger King Corporation. The patty was created in partnership with Australia’s national science agency CSIRO, Main Sequence Ventures, and Hungry Jack’s founder Jack Cowin who invested $1 million to develop the beef alternative. In addition to locations in South Korea, v2Foods’ patties are also available at Burger King locations in Japan and the Philippines.
Burger King’s plant-based Whopper goes global

Today, Burger King will add the Plant-Based Whopper to 325 locations in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Hangzhou across China. The new meatless burger is made with a vegan patty supplied by Dutch brand The Vegetarian Butcher which was acquired by consumer goods company Unilever in 2019. Reuters that the brand plans to expand its plant-based patty to 1,300 additional Burger King locations in China in the first quarter of 2021.

This month, multinational fast-food chain Burger King added the Plant-Based Whopper to select locations across Japan for a limited time. The new burger is made with a soy-based patty (made by Australian vegan brand v2food) along with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mayonnaise, and is served on a toasted sesame seed bun. “Burger King is proud to announce the launch of the Plant-Based Whopper, a 100 percent plant-based patty with a smoky, savory flavor created by its unique ‘open flame’ method,” a press release announcing the launch states. “Burger King has spent nearly two years developing a burger with a 100 percent plant-based patty. Now, we are proud to present the Plant-Based Whopper.”
