Annual Washington Tree Giveaway at County Fairgrounds Saturday

Granny smith apple, persimmon, and eastern white pine are just a few of the species being offered at the Washington Tree Committee’s annual free tree giveaway this Saturday. The event is being held for the second year at the Washington County Fairgrounds to allow social distancing amid the pandemic, and the public is asked to enter only from the campground road on the southeast corner of the fairground. Committee member Andy Dahl says 170 trees will be distributed for those who want to plant them, “We’ve got 15 species of trees so one of the things that we really want to push is diversity so we don’t have the same problem we had with Dutch Elm disease or more recently Emerald Ash Borer. So the more different kinds of trees you have, the less likely you’ll lose a bunch to some pest. So we try to get something for everyone.”

UI holding green events in lead-up to Earth Day

Here is a summary of this week’s activities: –UI Facilities Management, Building and Landscape Services are holding Campus Stewardship Days today 9-11 am. and tomorrow, 1-3 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the wooded area south of Boyd Law Building plant tree seedlings and remove garlic mustard. To volunteer, contact Shawn Fitzpatrick, shawn-fitzpatrick@uiowa.edu, 319-335-5107. Also as part of Earth Month, UI Landscape Services Tree Crew announced they have been using biodegradable, renewable, less hazardous canola oil in their chainsaws instead of petroleum-based bar and chain oil. “It always bothered me when cutting near water or wet pavement that you could see an oil slick from the petroleum-based bar and chain oil. I did a little research and found that many use canola (rapeseed oil) without sacrificing performance or affecting the saw negatively,” said Andy Dahl, UI arborist in Building & Landscape Services.

Lacie Borchert MARQUETTE Friends and relatives of Lacie Borchert, the 25-year-old Ishpeming woman found deceased in a lake next to Excelsior Street in Ishpeming on Friday, Nov. 27, are still searching for answers. While the Ishpeming Police Department has completed its investigation and ruled out foul play, those close to Borchert remain skeptical about the situation. A series of demonstrations were organized and held Monday and Tuesday, with friends and relatives appearing at various locations around Marquette County to raise awareness on the case, including one outside of the Marquette County Courthouse. “We are here (today) in a protest to fight for justice for Lacie,” said Maria Dahl, a close friend of Borchert’s. “We are here to find answers, to find facts and bring awareness.”
