united states and our allies, the very clear message that president biden put out there that nato and the united states are not a threat to russia. that there is a diplomatic pathway forward. and the threats of crushing sanctions on the russian economy and people, as well as the lethal ability of the ukrainian army today, much different than in 2014, is ultimately making putin recalculate and finding a diplomatic pathway. but everything he does belies his words. we need to see verifiable actions that move us in a different direction toward a diplomatic offering. you and your republican counter part on the senate foreign relations committee were working a bipartisan sanctions bill against russia. it now appears that bill is no longer operative after weeks of negotiations. you ve been voicing your disappointment with republicans for introducing their own sanctions package. it appears the biggest difference is that the
putin has on the border of ukraine 20,000 troops, artillery, and attack helicopters and we are now going to give the ukrainians recoilest tuna sandwiches? it s beyond belief what is going on in europe, and of course, the left says, what are you going to do? land the 101st airborne? we could start by saying yes to the request of the ukrainians for weapons. because putin now is hitting on the frontier with the rest of ukraine. especially eastern ukraine. you have to calculate, is it worth an invasion. in the calculation, you want to inject the fact the ukrainians aren t going to sit by as in the crimea where the population are overwhelmingly russian. there would be unrest and resistance. you give them weapons and make putin recalculate the cost of an invasion. we re not giving him anything to alter his calculation, and that s the scandal about our inaction.
