Sugar association opposes new legislation

LAHORE: Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (Punjab Zone) has termed legislation by Punjab Assembly black law for sugar mills.
Imprisonment term has been increased from one year to three years while fine increased from Rs1 lakh to Rs5 lakh, a spokesperson of PSMA said here on Wednesday. The recent amendment in the Punjab Sugar Factories Control Act, 1950 has turned it into the strictest law for the sugar industry, he claimed.
Under this amendment, he added, trial of the accused will be held before a section 30 magistrateâs court instead of an ordinary magistrateâs court. Not only that, he continues to say, but recently the Sugar Supply Chain Management Order 2021 has been introduced to regulate the sugar industry, which is another black law that could be a prelude to the closure of a business.

LAHORE: Pakistan’s apex trade body has advised the government against fixing of ex-mill sugar prices in the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa based on its own assessment and to rather appoint independent auditors for evaluation, it was learnt on Monday.
The federal government is about to freeze retail sugar price in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as sugar prices have exorbitantly increased, according to the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI).
“If the federal government wants to fix the price of sugar, the task may be assigned to four independent chartered accountant firms instead of government functionaries,” Nasir Hyatt Maggo, president of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) in a letter to the Prime Minister Imran Khan.
FPCCI Demands Independent Accountants to Set Sugar Prices
The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) has asked the government to allow independent chartered accountants to set the ex-mill sugar price in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa instead of the provincial governments fixing the price.
FPCCI President, Nasir Hyatt Maggo, wrote a letter to Prime Minister Imran Khan, saying, “If the Federal Government wants to fix the price of sugar, the task may be assigned to four independent chartered accountant firms instead of government functionaries.”
The chamber members believe that independent contractors should be hired for the job for determining retail sugar prices in both provinces as sugar prices have been already exorbitantly increased.
